No permit, but standards apply
For most rainwater harvesting systems for personal use, no permit is required. However, the installation must comply with the Drinking Water Decree and the relevant water-work standards (ISSO 70). Your municipality may offer support through subsidy schemes.
Drinking water and rainwater STRICTLY separated
The most important rule: drinking-water pipes and rainwater pipes must never be directly connected to each other. Both pipes must be clearly marked. Connection to the mains water supply — for example for emergency top-up during drought — is always done with atmospheric separation in accordance with EN 1717.
Documentation on delivery
With every installation you receive installation documentation and a checklist that complies with the applicable standards. For drinking-water systems you also receive the user and maintenance manual plus the annual water-quality tests. This prevents problems when selling the house or during inspections.
