Yes, rainwater can be made drinkable, but this requires multiple filtration steps and a system that complies with the Drinking Water Decree. For most households, use for toilet, washing machine and garden is the smartest choice, with the biggest savings.

Which filtering is needed?

For drinking-water quality, at least 4 steps are required: a pre-filter for coarse dirt, a sediment filter for fine particles, an activated-carbon filter for taste and chemical residues, and UV sterilisation or reverse osmosis for bacterial purification.

Legal requirements

A drinking-water system must comply with the Drinking Water Decree and ISSO 70. Drinking-water and rainwater pipes must never be connected to each other. Connection to the mains water supply (for emergency top-up) is done with atmospheric separation in accordance with EN 1717.
