From downpipe to toilet: how an underground harvesting system works, step by step.
The principle explained
Rainwater harvesting is surprisingly simple in concept, but requires expert execution. By burying a tank in the garden, rainwater is collected via the downpipes. This water first passes through a pre-filter (dirt trap) and then flows into the tank. A pump then delivers it via a dedicated pipe network to the applications in the house.
Which applications are there?
The collected rainwater can be used for flushing toilets, the washing machine, and watering the garden — the three biggest water consumers in the house. With additional filtering (sediment, carbon, UV) it can even be used for shower and tap, and with reverse osmosis even as drinking water.
What does a system consist of?
A complete system consists of: a storage tank (PE or concrete, 3,000-30,000 litres), pre-filter, hoses and pipework, pressure installation/pump, optional drinking-water top-up during drought (atmospherically separated in accordance with EN 1717), and — for drinking-water systems — multiple filter stages plus UV sterilisation. Everything must comply with the Drinking Water Decree.
